1. Introduction As data traffic increases with further developments in the information-oriented society such as multi-channel high-definition video delivery and cloud communications service, fiber to the home (FTTH) services, among other broadband services, are widely spreading. Especially in Japan, the number of FTTH subscribers exceeded 21.4 million as of September 2011, accounting for 59.1% of all broadband subscribers. To cope with projected further increases in transmission traffic, the introduction of the 10G-EPON system is now highly expected. The 10G-EPON system provides 10 times higher transmission speed than GE-PON, which is the current mainstream of FTTH. This paper reports on the 10G-EPON dual-rate optical transceiver for optical line terminal (OLT) applications, and the optical transceiver for optical network unit (ONU) applications, as well as their core technology ⎯ dual-rate burst transmission technology.
